RapidMask is a special UV sandblasting film that requires no washing. Thanks to the dry process , it greatly simplifies the production of sandblasting stencils and saves time when working. The combination of RapidMask High Detail (HD) and RapidMask High Tack (HT) allows for fine detail, halftones and deeper sandblasting of glass.
1. How does RapidMask work when it is not washed out?
When illuminated, UV light passes through the transparent parts of the master and changes the colour of the film from green to dark blue. The illuminated portions of the film harden and are then blown away during sandblasting. This creates a decor on the glass in the same way as conventional sandblasting with UV sandblasting foils.
2. Can RapidMask be used on materials other than glass?
Yes, but caution is needed with some materials. On certain surfaces, discolouration of the material may occur and will become apparent within approximately two hours of application. We therefore always recommend that you test on a small sample first.
For acrylic, RapidMask is not suitable for stand-alone use. This is because it can be very difficult to remove after sandblasting, especially if the film or material has been exposed to moisture. We therefore recommend that all applications on acrylic are tested beforehand.
3. How to apply RapidMask correctly?
For correct application, we recommend using the hinge method. This helps to accurately position the film without air bubbles and prevents it from shifting during bonding.
Application procedure:
- Clean the surface with a glass cleaner.
- Cut off the blue edges of the RapidMask film
- Apply the film to the substrate before removing the covering layer and align it precisely
- Apply masking tape to one edge to form a "hinge"
- Flip the film over, remove the masking paper and expose the adhesive layer
- Slowly add the film back on, using a squeegee to press it away from the glued edge
- Finally, remove the top transfer film
For halftone motifs, we recommend using the wet application method.
4. How deep can I sand with RapidMask?
The resulting sandblasting depth depends on the type of foil, the abrasive used, the pressure and the sandblasting technology.
RapidMask HT
Suitable for deeper sandblasting up to approx. 3 mm.
RapidMask HD
Designed primarily for fine details, halftones and surface sandblasting.
5. How do I know the correct illumination time?
Each illumination unit has a different output, so the correct illumination time needs to be set individually.
Properly illuminated film:
- changes the colour from green to dark blue,
- it will turn white in the illuminated areas,
- and blows away well when sandblasted.
For a detailed setup procedure, please refer to the section "Setting up the illumination unit" in the RapidMask manual.
Foils generally tolerate prolonged illumination better than inadequate illumination, so it is safer to choose a slightly longer illumination time.
